Two weeks ago my better half took me to the Lakedistict for a Birthday treat. We thought we'd ditch the clubbing scene for one weekend and get away from it all, and decided to go 'Old School' by trading in the route planners and Sat navs for a good old fashioned road map!

The first day we spent walking the hills of ambleside, But this just wet our appetite for bigger better things! We wanted to climb some real mountains........!

On the Sunday we set out to buy a rucksack to carry our provisions on our walk, and the shopkeeper said
'You wanna climb mountains?? 'Try Dundegon Gyll' !!! At 2000 metres high we liked the sound of that.....
So off we set with our funny woolly hats and a rucksack full of chocolate!!

The gruelling climb to the summit took us around two hours. Not bad for a couple of ammatuers! However Dungeon Gyll was no ordinary walk in the hills. At times we felt like Frodo and Sam on an epic journey! We jumped from rock to rock to cross a fast flowing waterfall. We battled against the rain, hail and snow, and finally made it to the summit. Bear Grylls eat you heart out!

Now for the tricky bit..........getting back down again! Unfortunately we lost the track we were supposed to be following so we had to guess our route back down the mountain. This led to serious consequences!

We found ourselves hanging onto rocks on the side of a mountain trying to find a way down. This particular route was far too steep, we had no ropes to aid our decent so our only option was to try and climb back up and find a safer route. This would have been easy if the rocks weren't coming loose under our grip and tumbling down the mountain towards other climbers.....ooops!

After seeing our lives flash before our eyes....we had a 'Bear Grylls' moment and the born surviver in us pulled us through. We managed to grab hold of the roots of plants and haul ourselves to safety.

But it wasn't over yet, we still had to find an alternative route. We had made it out of the rocky part of the mountain, now we had to try and cross the moss.
On the surface it looked pretty safe but under the grass lay deep holes filled with water, so we had to tread very carefully so as not to fall in! By this point we were tired and soaking wet where we had fallen in the moss, and pretty shaken up by the whole 'hanging on a mountain' incident!!
We still had another hour to go before we were at the base of Dundgeon Gyll, but luckily we had now found our way back onto the official route.

It was an emotional journey, we risked our lives, but we learned some valuable lessons of survival. We stuck together and finally made it to the base of Dundgeon Gyll in one piece........wey hey!!......Next stop Kilimanjaro!!!!
